How to do a thermoelastic analysis with a User-defined Model with Abaqus SwiftComp Gui?

SC Team,

I am currently using the Abaqus SwiftComp GUI and need to develop a custom User-defined model to understand the overall properties of a custom layup, specifically the coefficient of thermal expansion and the Youngs Modulus. So far I have recreated the example from the Abaqus-SwiftComp GUI manual in section 3.4 and was able to successfully generate the model and carry out the homogenization for an elastic model. However, when I try to carry out a thermoelastic homogenization I keep getting the following error in the command line window:

I/O error: Material control parameters: type isotropy ntemp

Do you know what this error means? How can I carry out a thermoelastic homogenization with a user defined model?

Thank you fo ryour help!

Usually it is much quicker to get your question answered if you post the quesiton insider Prof. Yu's group at https://cdmhub.org/groups/yugroup/forum. Many users and the tool developers can help you. I have Bo Peng, one of the developers of ABAQUS-SwiftComp GUI, know this question, hoping that she will get to you soon.

Currently only homogenization is available for thermoelastic analysis. Since I don't know your exact case, I tried thermoelastic homogenization analysis using my example and find it can run smoothly.  One thing noteworthy may be that you must define the specific heat and expansion in the material properties, and the expansion properties must have the same type as the elastic properties. For example, if materials is anisotropic in elastic properties, it should also be anisotropic in the expansion properties. If you have other problem, please let me know.

I have ensured that both of the materials that I have defined both have the specific heat and thermal expansion in the material properties and I have ensured that the expansion properties have the same type as the elastic properties and I am still getting the same error in the command window:

I/O error: Material control parameters: type isotropy ntemp

Do you have any other thoughts on what could be wrong? What were the exact materials that you used to conduct the example since you said that you can run the thermoelastic homogenization without error?

In the homogenization dialog box, did you select the type of the analysis to be thermoelastic?

Yes, the Homogenization executes normally when I run the model as an elastic analysis. It is when I set the analysis to thermoelastic homogenization when I get the I/O error.

If possible, could you please upload your .sc file to this question?  I have tried it using my own model and did not meet this problem.

      Bo,

I wasn't sure how to upload this file directly so I created a project and invited you to join it. In that project I uploaded this file as well as the CAE file that I was working with to define the 2d User Defined model. The link for the .sc file is attached below.

      Thank you!

This is a simple message board. I hope in the future you can post the question inside my group at https://cdmhub.org/groups/yugroup/forum. That forum is fully featured and you can provide attachments.

Thank you Wenbin. In the future I will be sure to post the question inside of that group. Bo, were you able to look at the .sc file that I uploaded?

    Hi,

The problem is that a discrete distribution of material orientation and the CTE are required at the same time. This is not available in the current version of the GUI. I have tried to code it but still need to debug it. Hopefully I can get it done in a few days. I will let you know once it is finished.

Thanks a lot for your interest and patience!

    Best regards,

    Bo

      Hey Bo,

Thank you very much for looking into the issue and for letting me know when you have resolved it. Since you mentioned that the current version of the GUI does not currently support this feature, would it be possible for me to use an older version of the GUI in the mean time?

      Thank you!

No, it is not available in earlier version. But I will update it tonight so that you can use it by tomorrow.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! The analysis runs fine now, thank you for making this modification. I will begin posting my problems inside of the yugroup from now on, thanks again!!!
