A Lecture Series for the Composites Manufacturing and Simulation Center at Purdue University

by

Charles Tucker

Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Spring 2018

Learning Goals

By the end of the lecture series, participants should:

  • Be conversant with orientation descriptors, standard measurement techniques for fiber orientation, fiber orientation and fiber length models used in injection and compression molding software, and how orientation enters mechanical property predictions.
  • Understand the fundamentals of orientation descriptors and prediction well enough to apply and/or extend the models to other composite materials and processes.
  • Be able to do calculations involving orientation tensors in Matlab.
