Your opinions on some terminology changes

    Dear All,

As discussed in the research meeting at Purdue, we are debating some terminology changes. Particularly, we would like to suggest the following changes:

    1. We define the smallest mathematical building of a structure as a structure gene (SG). This is because in biology gene means the fundamental building block while our previously used term genome usually means the complete set of genes presented in an organism.

    2. We reserve the phrase "structure genome" for the complete set of genes needed for a structure because a structure might have more than one genes. For example, a wind turbine blade could have hundreds of genes (cross sections) if one would like to model it as a beam.

    3. Our previously used term "mechanics of structure genome" (MSG) will be changed to "mechanics of structure gene (MSG)" for the reason that the formulation is actually directly over a structure gene, not multiple structure genes.

These changes will help us enlarge the possible application domains of our concept, in terms of design, analysis, and experiments related with structures in terms of material-structural properties relations.

Feel free to let the group know your suggestions and opinions.

In biology, there are two related terms: genetics (study of gene) and genomics (study of genome).  The main difference between genomics and genetics is that genetics focuses on a single gene  while genomics addresses all genes and their inter relationships in order to identify their combined influence on the growth and development of the organism (https://www.who.int/genomics/geneticsVSgenomics/en/).

In this sense, we have two additional terms:

Structure genetics (mechanics of structure gene): constitutive modeling over structure gene (homogenization and dehomogenization) like what we have been focusing on thus far.

Structure Genomics (mechanics of structure genome): study structural performance in terms of a complete set of structure genes (multiscale structural analysis). Seek the right genome for a structure to meet certain performance (structural design problem)
