Vabs input file guidance for smeared laminates

  1. Tony Truong

I am hoping somebody can help me understand a particular section of the VABS input file.

Specifically, if using the old input format and smeared laminate properties, should the material type/layup angles parameters be all zeros regardless of quadrants? i.e...

    1 1 0 0 540 0 0 0 0 0 0 0          (angle parameters set to 0)

    2 1 0 0 540 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

    etc.

No, smeared properties are still anisotropic, coordinate transformation is still needed. Although you don't have layup angle (theta_3) any more, you still have layer plane angle (theta_1) needed for transformation.

    Dr. Yu,

Thank you for your quick response. The VABS manual does not go into detail in calculating the layer plane angles for each node in the element.

Do you happen to know any other reference material on this?

PreVABS will compute this angle automatically for you. ---- Emailed forum response from wenbinyu@purdue.edu

PreVABS can compute this angle automatically. For sections cannot be handled by preVABS, you should be able to compute it based on Figure 4 and Figure 5, and the description corresponding to these two figures.
