Abstract

This series contains the 7-day lectures delivered by Prof. Charles Tucker for Composites Manufacturing and Simulation Center at Purdue University.

Abstract

Composites with discontinuous fibers are frequently processed by injection or compression molding, extrusion, 3-D printing, etc.  Flow during these processes generates a pattern of fiber orientation in the finished product, which controls the mechanical behavior of the product.  Being able to describe fiber orientation, measure it experimentally, and even predict orientation are central to the effective use of discontinuous fiber composites.  In this lecture series, participants will learn about orientation descriptors, standard measurement techniques for fiber orientation, fiber orientation and fiber length models used in injection and compression molding software, and how orientation enters mechanical property predictions.  Participants should understand the fundamentals of orientation descriptors and prediction well enough to apply and/or extend the models to other composite materials and processes.  Those who are interested will also learn how to do calculations involving orientation tensors in Matlab.
