We did a case study for a composite beam using VABS and ABAQUS beam section generate capability and compared with detailed 3D FEA analysis. The conclusion is that VABS can reproduce the detailed 3D FEA analysis at an efficiency much faster than ABAQUS beam capability. The accuracy of ABAQUS beam section generate function is not acceptable for composite beams. The summary powerpoint presentation, a table for comparing pros/cons of VABS and ABAQUS beam capability, step-by-step instructions for reproducing the results can be found in the supporting document. We also plan to carry out the same case study using other commerical codes such as ANSYS in the near future.
